GAFI and EEAA Discuss Strengthening Coordination on the Unified Environmental Data Registry and Streamlining Industrial Facility Registration

In line with the directives of Dr. Mohamed Farid Saleh, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade (MIFT Minister), to improve the investment climate and support the transition towards sustainable investment, the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) held a coordination meeting with representatives of the Sustainable Green Industry Program at the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA). The meeting discussed mechanisms for implementing the Unified Environmental Data Registry for industrial facilities and streamlining registration procedures and the fulfillment of related requirements, particularly for facilities operating in free zones and investment zones.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Eman Mansour, GAFI Deputy CEO; Eng. Hanaa Gomaa, Director of the Sustainable Green Industry Program; members of the team responsible for implementing the registry; and a number of senior officials and representatives of the relevant GAFI departments.
Discussions covered mechanisms for unifying environmental data sources and simplifying procedures for registration, data updates, review, and verification. These efforts are intended to support decision-making, improve the environmental performance of industrial facilities, and help them meet the environmental requirements of international markets, particularly the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
The two sides also discussed mechanisms for electronic integration and data exchange, as well as defining technical responsibilities and access permissions. This would help avoid repeatedly requesting the same data from investors while ensuring the confidentiality and security of information. They also discussed providing the necessary technical support to help facilities complete and correct their data and address technical challenges.
Participants discussed organizing joint workshops and awareness-raising events, particularly for companies operating in free zones and investment zones and facilities exporting to the European Union. They also considered designating focal points between the two sides and forming a joint technical team to follow up on the implementation of the registry, monitor challenges, and propose appropriate solutions.
The meeting also discussed preparing a cooperation protocol between the two sides to establish coordination and knowledge-sharing mechanisms, implement capacity-building programs, and develop electronic integration.
